The opening of a new Coconut Grove Police Substation is coming and we now have a date – Saturday, February 8th at 10:30am.

Because of your tremendous efforts last year, we are now on the brink of launching a new era prioritizing public safety and crime prevention for Coconut Grove with the historic grand opening of the new Coconut Grove Police Substation on the corner of Douglas Road (SW 37th Ave) and Grand Avenue in the heart of the West Grove.

With thanks again to Commissioner Marc Sarnoff and the City of Miami Commission, Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa and the financial support of the Sarnoff Foundation and County Commissioner Xavier Suarez, the Coconut Grove Police substation is set to open its doors for the first time with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, February 8th at 10:30am in front of the new substation at 3727 Grand Avenue.

Scores of us celebrated the announcement of the Grove police substation and what it signals for Coconut Grove. Nothing will indeed send a stronger message that you support the police substation, than joining us for what promises to be a huge contingent of Grove residents at the Grand Opening festivities on Saturday, February 8th.

Please save the date, mark your schedules and do your best to be there with your family, friends and fellow neighbors for the ribbon cutting and festivities and help spread the word!

Good News for South Grove

The following is an excerpt from an email received from Fernand R. Amandi who has spearheaded the efforts to improve police services in Coconut Grove:

As a result of our continued efforts to prioritize public safety we have been successful in securing unanimous City Commission approval for a new and permanent police substation in the heart of the West Grove. This is an historic development, as the Grove has never before had a single-use, stand-alone police substation. The decision to create the police substation is a direct sign of the commitment from the City to address our concerns.

We have been diligently working on this proposal over the last eight weeks and with the help of City Officials, County Commissioner Xavier Suarez and City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa were able to make the Grove police substation a reality.

Special thanks must be given to City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff who immediately championed our initiative, secured the location and went so far as to provide the necessary start-up funding from the Sarnoff Foundation. This facility would never have come into being without the support and follow through of Commissioner Sarnoff and his staff.

The police substation will be located on the northwest corner of Grand and Douglas at 3727 Grand Avenue and it is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2014. I hope that everyone will join in the grand opening festivities, with more information to follow in the coming weeks.

Utopia Road Repair Requests

MEMO

TO: The Honorable Marc Sarnoff
FROM: Members of the Utopia Home Owners Association of Coconut Grove
SUBJECT: Road Repairs in Coconut Grove

Members of the Utopia HOA have requested the City of Miami to investigate and repair the following problems on neighborhood streets. Photos are provided in the above slideshow. Click on the [i] in the top right hand corner to get photo specific information. The problems are also listed below without photos:

  • Repaving Poinciana Ave.
The Board of Directors for Utopia HOA, on behalf of the neighborhood, request the city to install traffic calming measures on Poinciana, especially between Douglas and Le Jeune. Our neighbors regularly walk and bike on this road and the speed of traffic is dangerous. We prefer tight traffic circles and buttons in the center of the road over speed bumps and similar vehicle damaging measures. We feel that paving Poinciana without traffic calming measures will further endanger the residents and pedestrians.
  • 4161 Malaga Ave.
It is hard to see how deep down this pit goes since it is now filled with clippings. However, you can see that the water/sewer manhole cover is getting undermined (about 1 o’clock in the picture). The city lamp post is also being undermined as well. I personally called the city about repairing this several months ago. It did not happen. This pit is very deep.
  • 3856 Poinciana Ave.
Description of the problem: Flooding due to bad drainage (AKA Lake Poinciana)
    Suggested remedy: Fix the drain.
  • 3856 Poinciana Ave.
We are very interested as to how we can get traffic calming measures as rush hour on Poinciana is ridiculous. I have trouble pulling out of my driveway and more often than not end up being honked at by people whizzing by while I wait for a chance.
  • 4115 Kiaora St.
Problem: Large and deep swale along the front of the house. Dangerous to traffic and close to breaking/tearing underground pipes and cables. Called many times during 6 months span. Nobody has shown up.
  • 3831 El Prado.
Problem: when it rains, it floods… Location of the problem: 3791, 3831 and 4005 El Prado.
Suggested remedy: for 3831 install a drainage ditch, for 3791 and 4005 repair swale created by trash pick up trucks.
  • 4050 Ventura Ave.
Location of the problem: In front of 4050 Ventura ave. Description of the problem: Pothole 12″ diameter. Suggested remedy: Fill it
  • 4121 La Playa Blvd.
There is a large banyan tree in the middle of La Playa Blvd just north of my home. The road around the tree and to the south of it is in terrible condition, with numerous pot holes and root intrusions. The photo does not show in great detail, but the puddle in the foreground is actually large pothole that fills with water whenever it rains. This look is taken from the south side of the tree, looking north.
Suggested Remedy: I suggest that the asphalt in this area be scraped and re-surfaced around the tree and for about 75 feet to the north and south of the tree.
  • 4169 Ventura Ave.
Problem: The grade in front of the vacant lot south of 4169 Ventura floods during modest and heavy rain. The water pools from two to three feet. The high water line is visible on the fence.
Suggested Remedy: Grading the low spot and installing a large storm drain in the road.
  • 4075 Malaga Avenue
Problem: deep swales created by the trash pick up crane
Location: in the front of the house and all along Malaga Avenue.
Remedy: the swales need to be filled (I have notified the City on three occasions in the last year)

    Problem: Street light are out
Location: All along Malaga Avenue (2 blocks)
    Remedy: Fix lights.

  • 4100 block of Ventura near La Playa
Problem: The road floods when it rains. There is no place for water to run off and remains under water for days.
Suggested Remedy: Install a storm drain in the road.
  • 4051 Ensenada
Problem: The road floods when it rains.
Sugested Remedy: Install a storm drain.
  • 3974 Utopia Ct
Problem: The swale around the landscaped circle on Utopia Court (just past 3974 utopia) has been chewed up by the garbage truck.
Remedy: It needs repaving and sod.
