Several neighbors in our area have recently reported calls from individuals impersonating law enforcement. This trend is not unique to our area; however, we’re sharing this for awareness and as a reminder to be vigilant before responding to unsolicited requests for money or other information.
How They Work
Scammers may mirror local area codes, use the name of a real person, or know basic information about you to make the call seem legitimate. They often use fear and urgency, mentioning fines, penalties, warrants, or missed jury duty. The initial request may not involve money—recently, callers demanded that someone report to a police station or threatened to send someone to their home to pick them up.
Legitimate law enforcement will not solicit you directly.
How You Can Help
- Do not provide personal information, send money, call the number back, or follow instructions from the caller/sender.
- Do hang up and independently contact the appropriate police department, court, or government agency using an official number or website.
- Be vigilant. Scammers’ tactics are designed to play on emotion. When in doubt, hang up and verify independently.
